Here's your change.

spk_0:   0:03
Let's forget somebody doesn't like the movie very much. Pretty good that you remember the fucking side.

spk_1:   0:10
Correct.Crack open a cold box of wine, or pour something cold on ice because it's the binge watchers podcast   . Ah, I don't like you

spk_0:   0:45
almost don't folks. He hates it. So track him on instagram. Dangerous at Dangerous. Don't know if he's not dangerous. I don't remember your Twitter hand, but he's Dave's Never on social, so actually hangs out on the Facebook group. So do you want to stock Dave and go there?

spk_1:   1:05
Come on. The anti social number. Antisocial network called Crew. Uh

spk_0:   1:14
um, Look, I got a lot of movies on my list, man. I do, too. They like sports movie. I see you just get what is the blood starts flowing and get at

spk_1:   1:23
11 and I cut down like there's a lot more going on here.

spk_0:   1:27
I got one too 3456789 10 11 12 13 14 in 16 17 18 19. This is all just off the top of my head movies. If I saw him on TV, I would have to stop. Let's say I was doing chores on a Sunday dishes on a Sunday cooking breakfast would stop. Have to watch the movie, you know? I mean, it's it pops up, got sit down, gotta watch it And nobody does that anymore. Nobody stops to watch something on the actual television. They queue it up. They downloaded tol be pulling

spk_1:   2:03
for the first time in forever. When I was at my father in law for Easter like we popped on, he popped on Django unchained. All weird would be to come into the middle of home in probably the on foreign

spk_0:   2:20
car. We're talking about the difference in skulls. I want to talk about that. You know, the genetic science of, like the late 18 hundreds and the argument about the different schools. I mean, if you're walking into an Easter Sunday dinner and that's the scene you walk into your thinking other people

spk_1:   2:37
is even worse than that. It was the beginning scene with Leonardo DiCaprio having Thio two slaves go at it. No, the Mondo fight sing. I forgot how bonkers and who he is.

spk_0:   2:50
It's pretty gnarly out there. I mean, I mean, look, Tarantino does things for cinematic purposes, so for him to argue that it's the history of the history, the history of the bloody country that we live in global level block. He's doing it for the sensation and the exploitation. Like I'm not gonna sit here and say that he's like arguing. He's a history buff in this is the only history of America or whatever and accept it in this all this stuff happened. The reason for him to incorporate it into a movie is obviously for the sake of making the movie. You know, like, uh, he gets on a free high horse when he's in these really awkward I don't know. You watch any really awkward interviews about that with where they were trying to gauge whether he was exploiting or just giving, like, a historical record of what happened. Great. You know?

spk_1:   3:39
Yeah, no, uh, I've seen him have some awkward interviews and he tries the That's what I'm looking for. Just a lot of bullshit.

spk_0:   3:49
Yeah, he's definitely, like drinking his own. Cool it, you know? I

spk_1:   3:53
mean, like, just saved, like, just as it was cool. And then let's move on, because that's at the end of the day what you did. Yeah.

spk_0:   3:59
I mean, nobody more after, Like he's like, Oh, I read something terrible. I can't believe it's part of real history But I put it in my movie because I got There's no other word for excited. You don't even like he could have said. I went off on a tangent and I included in the movie I'm a filmmaker. It's not my job to judge one way or the other. You just like job, too. Representative. Visual medium. You have a mean end of story, but it was like a uh ah hot discussion for No, no, no, probably the whole year. Really. This is not the way I wanted our sports movie discussion to go. Yeah, he

spk_1:   4:36
hasn't made a move. Yes account. Inglorious bastards in the Bear Jew with a baseball bat?

spk_0:   4:43
Oh, no, no. It would be kind of cool to see Tarantino do look at sports betting movie years. It would be kind of interesting. Like, what's his take on on sports movies?

spk_1:   4:54
Well, you know, I didn't put it on here, but like, you know, what director did What Director does sports movie that you wouldn't expect from was Sam Raimi did. For the love of the game, of Kevin Costner.

spk_0:   5:07
Oh, yeah, that is kind of random, huh? That's like a director for hire project. I wonder if Rayna was like, Oh, I heard Costner is doing this, and I have a chance to do it. I better. I better call my agent backer, you

spk_1:   5:17
know? Yeah. I can't remember where that felt. He just decided he wanted to try a sports movie or because how even quick and the dead at least that we had a stamp on It felt like Sam. Oh,

spk_0:   5:30
man. Speaking of agents, though, like all these backdoor deals are starting to come out in the regular press now. But how? How it actually goes down like your agent has a special relationship with the studio or a filmmaker and that determines whether or not you get paid is a screenwriter or they develop your projects. I mean, this is and this is Well, I mean, it's been going on since the bullpen days, but like for them to actually talk about it in the conversation is kind of really fun, You mean, but they're rattling. Everybody sells things out. Now, you no speak. Well, you

spk_1:   6:00
know what that comes don't like package deals and all that shit, That's Ah, well, that's been common practice for ever. Speak of a package deal is this movie sounds like one of those somebody that represents Michael Jordan? Yes. Money?

spk_0:   6:14
Uh, well, yeah. I mean, like Okay, so what? What gets this movie made? We want to advertise Looney Tunes. We wanna have an autobiography about Michael Jordan's career and Michael Jordan's in it like So you know, Bill Murray and the guy from Seinfeld definitely did this movie because it's Michael Jordan doing the movie and they got to hang out with, Like, a garden like That's like That's the reason you sign on the space jam, right? Yes,

spk_1:   6:37
I guess, is like Bill Murray note is like a big sports guy

spk_0:   6:41
here. Oh, he's a major sports fan. Members really saying, Um, I don't know how much is in the bad basketball. He's really I know he isn't super in basketball, don't know about football, but he's ah, out spoken baseball fan, and he's obviously like a major golf, like he's like a professional celebrity golf player. His brothers will let professional golfers, but what again? That's like the the most Pel sport you can play, I guess. Like, uh, you know, you definitely definitely have to regular mortgages in a reverse mortgage and several cars if you play golf on a regular basis. I mean, that might be a studio type of event in my mind. That's what I fantasize that typical golfer to be, You know, a certain demographic. Let's see that, right? Like, uh um, I don't even know where to start. Like like, I have probably more baseball movies on here. Which

spk_1:   7:43
baseball? And, um, Boxing,

spk_0:   7:46
Yeah, baseball moxie do come up a lot presently. Golf. Yeah, which is random. Me? Yeah. Um, and other some movies that you can question whether or not they they they're sports movie or they're they're a mixed There's such a mash up that they could be included in, like, a subcategory. Right. And then I then I was sitting here thinking like, Okay, how much of the sport is played in the movie? Case in point. I did not put Jerry wire around here, which he categorizes a sports movie, but I see that as more like a romantic comedy or a drama that happens have scored a little background like like the sports is just a plot device unit, I mean, um, so So I kept it off. It almost made. It was, though. And then, you know. But I do have filled dreams on here. Kevin Costner. Another what I consider another baseball, right? Like he talks about the white set White Sox scandal and gives baseball stars that have fallen out of the limelight a second chance, albeit in the afterlife. Spoiler alert. But the movie's been out for 40 years. Can't really ruin it. He built a baseball field, his farm that's going under and the bank's about to seize it. And essentially, they show up to play baseball. It's like a second chance for everybody. That's a great movie.

spk_1:   9:04
It really is. Oh, my God. Well, I think we've talked about it before, but, like it has one of the I don't just chokes you up moments like you didn't have a catch. Uh

spk_0:   9:12
oh, man, Yeah, I was just watching an interview like Kevin Costner. Like doing like the anniversary interviews, right? They were asking about a couple of his movies like That's what YouTube is. Good for me. There's these these video channels where they're going, We'll catch a star and the last time, like a round of questions about like, Hey, here's the pinnacle. Here's the highlights of your career. And then if you don't have time to watch his movies, at least to get here and talk about the stuff we did, you know? And you know, that came up like how they turned that one little tiny moment into the the centerpiece of Act three. And like the whole movie builds to that one moment like, you know, what do you think it's about? First, you think he's building the baseball field the same his farm. Then you think he has the baseball field to save his daughter. Then you think, Yes, baseball film, too, put the ghost to rest or whatever they got like short changed when they were alive. And then you find out the entire movie is just about. I'm getting one last chance to connect with his father, who was a strange from from his life. You, you you like, you

spk_1:   10:15
know, it's been a long time since I've watched it, but I guess I never really broken down like I've just seen that movie and just accepted it for what it is, but I never broke it down to its base elements.

spk_0:   10:24
Yeah, and those of the best movies, man. Think about it. Like the ones that have won best picture of a certain for certain reasons. Like they're not really over complicated stories. They just hit the right elements at the right times and come together in a red waiting to catch everybody.

spk_1:   10:40
I like pizza. So, um I don't know, man. Do you want to, like, maybe divided by sport or we we, you

spk_0:   10:52
know, just do one for 11 for one. Somebody will say a movie. And then, you know, you give your two things and I'll until for my

spk_1:   11:00
Luca, you know, Well, um I think I think about have 1/2 assed many as you. So I will just kind of plow long. Um, and these air, No particular order sandlots everybody.

spk_0:   11:16
Everybody is a sound one. And I can appreciate a sports movie that's like about kids. Like a coming of age story for kids. Playing sports is kind of like I don't know if it's true in other countries, but a zipline American pastime. American boys coming up like we go through things and like we go through adolescence, and part of that is caught up in playing sports in those past time. So that's a good pick.

spk_1:   11:38
You know, that's where you gather your friends and you know that it that's that age. They're like early middle school or,

spk_0:   11:46
well, elementary. I'd like to believe that filmmakers of Sand lot or the writers were inspired by bad news Bears in 1976 with Walter Matthau, because that's the Pinnacle Little League movie for me. But I think maybe that was the start of the on re out of control kids sports movies, right?

spk_1:   12:07
I'd say it's definitely gone.

spk_0:   12:09
Yeah, because it because there's definitely, like, formulate highlights of the sports kidsmovies you told me if you agree or not like, um, in sports, Kidsmovies dirt left the outcasts of the rebel kids. But then they find their place by being champions of game. They're playing, you know, like they find their place is generally those movies. Well,

spk_1:   12:32
it's also one of the rear movies, like, kind of like like Rocky, where you got you for people who for haven't seen it forever, they lose the big gate

spk_0:   12:43
Yes, you see, the list is unveiling itself. They were just falling a natural rhythmic pattern here because Rocky three is on my list. It's and the reason I go to Rocky three is how he compiled the sports movie list was I tried to go with my gut reaction. If and either Rocky movies or on TV, why stop? Maybe you'll wanna be guaranteed to stop a frakking three plane. Yes, because you could follow either path. In this movie you can watch. You can watch Mr Teas journey because he wants it bad and he's hungry. TB in Rocky's position I never really got a chance. Granted, he's a little more aggressive about how he goes about it, but whatever he's in on it, he's honest. He's completely authorized, and he and he's like Rocky from the original Rocky. And then Rocky has lost the eye of the Tiger has got to get it back, and it has the best freeze frame montage that everybody will be talking about forever came running down the beach with Apollo Creed Man, you people that like it's the most gay hetero movie moment in like the history of cinema, playing

spk_1:   13:54
to Rocky for

spk_0:   13:55
you too. Uh, like, what's this funny about sports? When we sue is like, you will question your heterosexuality, your bisexuality, You're homosexual. Your question at all. But you'll be okay with it because the movie's air entertained. You just go for the ride. Yeah, you gonna do about it? And you know what? If somebody out there just got felt awkward but what I just said or your response, you know, they're gonna do they're gonna go turn on the sports sports movie. We'll watch guys just beat each other up for an hour and 1/2 and have a beer go to bed and they're gonna feel justified. Hold

spk_1:   14:34
my mind. They might find a movie where guys wrestle. You know, this masculine like the wrestler.

spk_0:   14:40
Well, day Nice or like vision quest? No. Nice girl wrestling Also. Pinnacle, also one of my dinosaur movies. Matthew Modine. Best movie. Who was he? Well, probably you kids out there probably know him is the first villain from stranger things,

spk_1:   14:55
But he was also in full metal jacket and he was the thing in the late

spk_0:   15:04
you almost said late nineties and I was gonna go. Yeah, varsity Blues in any given Sunday to football movies you can take a look at. And now there's an FBI investigation named after a varsity. Please. I

spk_1:   15:14
concentrated rewatching varsity blues just for that reason. But I didn't get to fit it in before this.

spk_0:   15:20
Well, man, I haven't

spk_1:   15:21
seen it since, like 2000 or 99. Whatever came out,

spk_0:   15:24
I guess we could cost you some of these. Oh, we're talking about the kids movies. I should have dropped mighty Ducks, too, but I didn't. That's

spk_1:   15:32
Ah, that's like the favorite. Like a lot of people like really respect that movie. Like sports figures like Really love that movie part.

spk_0:   15:40
Yeah, Mighty Ducks, too. It's kind of based on, like the 19 eighties were alluding to the United States and Russia, but in Mighty Ducks, two is the Junior Hockey League versus like Iceland or something. But the hockey is taken very seriously in that movie. Forget

spk_1:   15:57
that. Forget a bunch of like hockey movies. I'm going to kind of a bunch of, you know, Happy Gilmore. It's kind of also golf movie, but, you know,

spk_0:   16:05
technically, hockey stick

spk_1:   16:08
gotta vote, please with hockey stick.

spk_0:   16:12
So if you don't wanna watch the preteen adolescence side, but I mean, Mighty Ducks. Two is a great movie, and it's a mil. You Estevez, probably his best playing coach, Bombay and, uh, and I like it better. The original, like I feel like the original, had a lot of growing pains for the concept, but Mighty Ducks two. It's actually like to me sequel. It's better than your animal, Um, and then slap shot. I want to go to the other end of the spectrum if you want. Like a more adult, um, hockey movie with Paul Newman that said that industry standard until, like the movie Goon came along. But goods on my list Because if I have to pick one honky movie for the rest of time, then he's probably be slap shot.

spk_1:   16:50
I gotta get. I gotta get around watching Slapshot Almost supposed to be

spk_0:   16:54
nothing. It's breaking hearts as it seems. You

spk_1:   16:56
have a thing about this.

spk_0:   16:58
Okay, there you go.

spk_1:   17:00
It's not hockey, but I'm gonna go blades of glory.

spk_0:   17:03
Good, good. That'll that'll set me up for two of mine. Um, so that's figure skating. It's male figure skating. Specifically, it's really funny. There's. They incorporate Queen music any electric dance flight fight thing at the end, which is pretty funny. But it has a training montage, Um, which is a parody of a training montage in will be called Cutting Edge, which is about a debt like an injured hockey player. That becomes a figure skater because they get this idea that somebody who has the intensity of a hockey player will somehow be able to manage this diva figure skater who's like Tonya Harding type but rich instead of instead of pork. But that brings up I Tanya. See, you see how I did that day? I just rounded the bases. Just walking around

spk_1:   17:54
this base is never thought about it.

spk_0:   17:58
Yeah, well, I mean, like, again the front runner was cutting edge because how many movies about figure skating are there that take it seriously until you have a good story about it? And then, and like I said, cutting edge was the gold standard until I can. You came out a couple of years ago,

spk_1:   18:14
you know, I thought of it. So it's a biography I just never does right there. It's a fucking figure skating Such a good movie, though.

spk_0:   18:22
Yeah, um there's gonna be no easy transition on Mr Haughey.

spk_1:   18:28
Well, I got one. I got kind of, like in the vein of Hi, Tommy is kind of like, uh, well, hell, if we want to talk about winter sports talk about cool runnings. Oh,

spk_0:   18:38
sure that someone was too. Yeah, you're making bobsled team. And this is not made up. Unlike the trend at honky came in Mighty Ducks, too. And quick shadow to Trinidad because apparently, listen to our podcast, which is really funny, but whatever. Um, there's a real Jamaican possible team that, uh, there's a lot of people that fall from grace. See, there's like, a running theme like, um, athlete that fall from Grace gets a second chance. This guy was in the loop. It contender on American, bought some team cheated. And 30 years later, in real life, this is real. Guys, you look the story up. He was in Jamaica, I don't know, hanging out and somebody find out who he was. And they wanted to change their sport from Olympic running to Olympic box leads. And the almost one they almost won the Olympic.

spk_1:   19:26
Yeah, they got pretty far.

spk_0:   19:28
Yes, they won the respect of everybody else that have been competing in it for like, you know, however long it has existed Um, talking about underdogs, I'll jump right into my next baseball movie on my list. Brewster's millions again. Does it have another category? Of course, you could be considered a drama because if you have it comedies from the seventies and eighties, some of them are pretty dramatic, like some of them have these really dark moments, and Brewster's millions has some seriously depressing moments. But it's also very funny, but it's actually my favorite. Um, Richard Pryor. Next time I'm eating, moving in and that doesn't one where he's a school bus driver but Brewster's millions. I don't know why I love this movie so much. He's a guy. He wants to be immediately baseball player. He's in the minor leagues, Um, like little town baseball team. He hears all this money from an uncle he didn't know he had, and the whole concept of this movie is he's gotta spend a portion of it in so many days to get the rest of it. It's like a game. His uncle's playing with him about greed or whatever and he arranges a baseball game with. Is it like it is the Yankees or the Mets? Do you remember?

spk_1:   20:37
I think I couldn't tell you. It's been years since I've seen it. Maybe the Yankees.

spk_0:   20:41
Yeah, so he. But he arranges the game with, like a major league team because he thinks his team is good enough to take them on. And he thinks he personally. Is it good enough? Player? But he always felt like he could have been in the major leagues on Look, that's the chance he missed out on life. And there's a moment in this movie where I don't know how Richard Pryor did this, but you look at him as this character, and you feel like you're watching him process the fact that he's not good enough. Then he realizes, as this character he's not good enough on the movie. Seems seemed. The moment seems so genuine and real, like We harp harp about remakes about like don't make this movie. It's like the Bible of a certain time of movie. You just don't you don't make it like it's like a treasure that you just leave the low right now, but I will watch another Brewster's, but I don't know if he would ever hit that moment. Obviously, like that might be unique. Teoh the director. Or or maybe it was Richard Pryor or something was going on that day. Like, I don't know. I would love to know what happened that day, but, you know, they didn't really document films the way they do. Now. Look, everybody loves a behind the scenes in this technology, right? You're writing a second camera behind the scenes and you're doing interviews and you're putting them online. I would love to know how they got to that moment that day, but of course, I don't know if everybody watching the movie is gonna be looking for these things when I watch movies. Those are the things I'm looking for. Yeah, I mean, I don't know, but I recommend

spk_1:   22:12
everybody watched Brewster's millions the good I haven't seen that in years.

spk_0:   22:16
Um, I might stick with baseball because I missed a hockey movie called Mystery Alaska again about underdogs trying to hold up against the big guys and see what they can do. Um, well,

spk_1:   22:26
underdogs in baseball You got Moneyball? Yes, Kind of. A fairly well That's actually what Brad Pitt's best performances. Billy Beane.

spk_0:   22:35
Oh, and that's the movie that they make fun of. Jonah Hill for being nominated for right is not the Woody goddess. His Oscar nomination for wasn't money,

spk_1:   22:42
but was it that winter was a wolf of Wall Street? Fuck.

spk_0:   22:46
I think he's been twice nominated now, hasn't he? I think it was up for Moneyball,

spk_1:   22:53
Brad. Yeah, I think you might be right. I think he was.

spk_0:   22:55
Yeah, Billy being in the opening days, it's okay, third rate team. And they don't give him a lot of money to make it to really run his team effectively. So he devises a mathematical system. Oh, by the way, that character, Jonah Hill Place, is like a an amul graham. Whatever that, however you pronounce that word. It's like he's like three or four people put together that we're working on the system. He's not one person, all right. So, like Billy Beane, Israel, the formula toe put the baseball team together in the computer using math. That's riel, but they had basically invented a character that Jonah Hill plays to explain that system to regular people like us. The audience

spk_1:   23:38
Oh That's just, you know, screenwriting by. She kind of have to do that sometimes. Yeah. Um, you've also got a league of their own.

spk_0:   23:47
Yeah, I see it. The league of their own. And I just wrote down major league.

spk_1:   23:53
You can't go wrong with that either. But I think of their own. I mean, I mean, uh, you don't know about. It's also a true story about with the female. When everybody went off to war, there was no baseball to be played because most of players were off fighting. So they have female leagues Yet how they were the George, not the Georgia Peach. Rockford Peaches? I don't remember, actually. Well, they were the peaches. I definitely know that I can't remember. What town.

spk_0:   24:19
Um, that was a long pause. Sorry. Uh, I was really Your base will be in mind. I was gonna jump in and say like, uh, major league. I watched that for the Tom Berenger story. I mean, it's got wild thing. I mean, you got Charlie Sheen and his best and you got Wesley Snipes in the least in the first movie gets replaced in this sequel, but he's playing Willie Mays. Hayes who can run like everybody has really great talents, but they're kind of raw talent in the movie or second chances. Like a time burger comes up from playing in like, I don't know, where is he playing a different league or something in another country? And then comes a period. He's a catcher, but his needs air blown. But he has, like a romantic interest with Rene Russo. It was like trying to put his life back together. And that's the reason I watch that again. I feel like they're running. Thing with sports movies is the underdogs.

spk_1:   25:14
Because people like to refer. Underdog, you know, um,

spk_0:   25:19
like Cinderella Man was boxing with a broken hand. Yeah,

spk_1:   25:26
well, we've also got the fighter, like, underdog stories or, you know, a guy that's been a while since I've seen it. But, uh, what do you like? He was doing good. And then he was out of the game for a while, came back. It was like a comeback story.

spk_0:   25:39
Which one you're talking about? The fighter, Marco Thio. Two brothers. They live down in Lowell, Massachusetts. What, over their famous in their town? Yeah. When was a boxer then got hooked on crack. And then the little brother was coming up and then went to jail. Queen his life up a little bit. And they're kind of like the unofficial mayors of their town, huh? And then there was an actress who wanna move won an award that they were nominated for that movie. Everybody, I think it's because they master the Boston accent. I don't know if they really for their acting abilities, give me a little slice of Massachusetts and all the mass

spk_1:   26:16
ALS was pretty well, um, you don't know me if we're gonna stick with boxing for a moment. I still got a raging bull, which De Niro would do near his best performances.

spk_0:   26:28
And again, like someone you come across, the police is overrated. And for me, that's one that falls into the overrated category. He likes you. It's

spk_1:   26:38
like I'm not gonna drag on conversation.

spk_0:   26:42
And I could say I mean the other day not to throw you into the buses I see around here. But you were saying in the day that you felt like the space Jim itself was overrated, and that might be true, but I feel like it was like Michael Jordan just telling you his life story. But he loves Bugs Bunny, so they're like throw Bugs Bunny in

spk_1:   26:56
