crack open a cold box of wine. Opal Something cold on eyes because the binge watches.

spk_0:   0:32
Uh, okay. In order to tear and development bus. Ah, they have to take a step back. You got to talk about Dan Gilroy a little bit. Just

spk_1:   0:50
a little bit.

spk_0:   0:50
Yeah, A little bit like you should know. Ah, Born in Santa Monica, California. You hung out a little bit in the in New York, went to school. Blobel blinds at Dartmouth College. Um has some connection to the Boston Globe was for us. Like the critics in the film world and all that stuff I know he's Dan Gilroy. I've seen one war and one of the other movies, Um, the one I'm most familiar with. It's Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal plays like the teensy reporter of the Midnight Shift. It was like obsessed with stories, and at one point he's creating stories. Would you say it's a cult movie? Dave Nightcrawler.

spk_1:   1:26
Um I think it's getting there.

spk_0:   1:28
Yeah, it's got some kind of cold status, but here's the thing. Um, then Gilroy is the son of Frank Gilroy, who was like a famous playwright, won a Pulitzer Prize.

spk_1:   1:39
I think he's like a brother to another. Tony Gilroy,

spk_0:   1:42
a Tony's a writer and a director as well. They haven't third brother was apparently dance twin who actually edited Villa Bosa, which we're about to tear into. But I might have said, already tearing into Yeah, I'll think of other things to say, Folks, I'm sorry, but no, I didn't I didn't put together. I didn't know he was the son of Frank Gilroy. Like that name I know. I know that name. You don't I mean, um, I don't personally know this playwright, having read its place, Haven't seen this place. But I The name rings a bell and turns out it's because he's, uh, that playwright, Um, how do I Yeah, I guess my first instance of Gilroy is just the fact that, um, saw freakin nightcrawler. But, dude, I didn't know he had anything to do with the writing. A free like Here's the thing. You're the son of a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and the first thing you do in your screenwriting career you go right Free, Jack.

spk_1:   2:37
Free Free

spk_0:   2:39
Jack of all things What's Free Jack? Folks tell us Airways Eraser. You think he's dead? That reanimated corpse because some rich dude wants to take over his body. Rene Russo's the girlfriend. She's aged because you know, she remembers him back when they were little sweethearts. And then isn't Mick Jagger in the movie? He is. Yeah. Okay, so this is a very weird SciFi Nicci movie B movie that's floating out there, folks. And you can go, I'm sure Free Jack is available everywhere. So So you're the son of, Ah, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, and then you write Free Jack. Years later, you'll end up on Real Steel, which is like a robotic version of the Rocky movie. It's all right. It did start out as a Richard Matheson story. He's a great science fiction writer, but real steel. Is it really watching Hugh Jackman, the Wolverine punch dudes out using a robot, and the movie ends like Rocky. But with robots, it's for fun movie. And then you're

spk_1:   3:47
essentially, uh, over the top, but with robots.

spk_0:   3:51
Yeah, and then years later, you get this creepy little movie called Nightcrawler, and then Dan Gilroy is on the scene now, getting ready for this podcast, trying to dig up some dirt on Gilroy. I didn't know that they were me. Russo started dating him and then married him after free Jack. Oh, and they have a kid, and they've been They've been married this entire time. I would never put these two together.

spk_1:   4:17
I mean, now that you say that it makes sense because their paths cross block is free Jacking the nightcrawler. And now this movie.

spk_0:   4:26
Yeah. I would have just thought, you know, that Rene Russo was Gilroy's after, you know, just one member of his family, but no, Apparently, they've been shacked up for a while.

spk_1:   4:38
Good for him.

spk_0:   4:39
Yeah, I've asked my wife. This is like, Hey, so what if I have, like, a partner movie where ah, train a relationship with somebody else and, you know, it's intimated. Whatever it is, I think we're neighbors. So is intimate with Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. Right?

spk_1:   4:54
Uh, do you like

spk_0:   4:55
what's that exchange there? You know? You mean like, Hey, honey, how was your day off? Pretty good. Um, that second, Jake Gyllenhaal was for dinner. Uh,

spk_1:   5:09
well, he wrote it.

spk_0:   5:11
He puts her there, pushed her to that limit. Um, it should be in the limelight for a little while. He was talking about how Velvet Bus I brought her back into the limelight. I was literally watching this movie about up until about 10 minutes that we were getting ready to podcast. And I was like, loading clips. Crash Social Media Kingdom on the instagram twitter of the Facebook. They're spoiler alert clips, though, folks. I labeled them a correct correctly. I said, watch at your own risk. Like I'm showing murders, Dave. I'm showing like I'm like AC three best bits. I threw it out there, huh? I always wonder if Dave's gonna like something. You hate something. Um, I couldn't read into his text earlier when he said he's ready for the discussion tonight, so I don't know. Well, first of all, are you a fan of Dan Gilroy? Another movie?

spk_1:   6:01
Yeah, I'd say I am because I really like Nightcrawler. I like the other movie he directed for this, which was terrible. Name a good movie. Roman J. Israel Esquire with

spk_0:   6:13
Washington That that came out just recently, Actually,

spk_1:   6:16
like a year and 1/2 ago.

spk_0:   6:18
Yeah. And Denzel Washington. It so it's an interesting character for Denzel.

spk_1:   6:23
Yeah, it's like basically, uh I don't know if you'd say he's autistic or

spk_0:   6:28
Oh, yeah, he's a guy like Asperger's. He's on the spectrum.

spk_1:   6:31
He's definitely on the spectrum. And he looked well, they've cartwheel, but but that? Yeah, but anyways, that's Ah, you know, we're not here to talk about that movie, but it does tie into Dan Kilroy. Um, Nightcrawler, I really, really want to go back. Hurry. Watch. I did see it in the theater. And, um God, that movie, uh, you know, some people have compared it to, like, a modernity taxi driver, just in the sense that, you know, he's kind of a sociopath or, uh uh, you know, they say Jake Gyllenhaal's performance and Nightcrawler he doesn't blink once. So

spk_0:   7:09
I don't believe very often I have to keep eye drops, like, actually lubricate my eyes the way a normal human beings eyes should be lubricated. Huh? So I don't know. I mean, if you were an actor and you blinked all the time, I don't know how you would train yourself to not going. That's a little more difficult, but

spk_1:   7:29
yeah, because it's a natural thing we do without thinking about it. Supposedly, supposedly, uh, but those were just talking

spk_0:   7:41
about creepy movies. I can definitely push for being a creep on the microphone, so that works. Although I have a stinking suspicion that, like, uh, you were talking about podcast don't know, knows like, Oh, no religion, politics, and don't creep out. Your audience is what I was reading. This article was like, Oh, we've definitely done a couple of those things before. Uh uh. I also think I know which of the host people are more inclined to listen to of always. And it's not probably the order that you would think, um, anyway, not to bring down the show that's doing so well. So exciting. Gonna be on the heat map right here. Seven minutes in your fucking killing it, um So Villa Bus, huh? It's any movie's gonna go cold overnight. I think this movie is gonna get cold said it's pretty fucking quickly because you wonder what the fuck in the title is referring to the whole goddamn movie. I don't know if it mentions that hurt that Rene Russo's character wasn't a band throughout the movie. Like if there's a lot of conversations at the art galleries between these friends and they're like inside information and Also, the friends kind of trying to one up each other that the movie's like a surrounded, surrounded like an art collective. And there's about 45 million people. I mean, here's a big question. I mean, do you think this movie would have done as well or have gotten a Netflix and got released? We'll be attracting so many eyeballs if it wasn't a list cast. Basically, here's the general concept of the movie folks. Paintings are possessed in there, killing people. They come in contact with him.

spk_1:   9:15
Um, I, I think, with I think it's still made of. Ah, he still could have made a great movie without this cast, meaning. I think the concept alone is interesting

spk_0:   9:27
about, like that concept. I think it's a great concept. I'd like the idea of haunted paintings that have a demonic force that could come after you if you express greed or try to control the paintings. That's what that's what it seems to be. Either the person gets greedy where they try to force the painting to do something and get pissed. But, um, I mean, if it's not this cast, if it's not Joanne Hall Russo, Colette Um Natalie Dire. Si is familiar, John Malkovich. Obviously, you don't mean like if you don't have this cast, you know? I mean, basically okay, Like, the concept is cool, right? But I think this is a movie that would probably end up the back shelf of a horror section in a video store. People would find it, maybe start talking about it, right? Pass it around. I mean, do you agree or do you not following the fantasy that I'm creating, you

spk_1:   10:24
know? No, I hear what you're saying. Um, yeah, I think it I think it's still could, uh would attain that. I don't know. I think it could still build a cold audience without the without the this particular cast. But I think this cast is gonna push that along even faster. Um,

spk_0:   10:43
yeah, yeah, yeah. It's gonna raise it to, like, a whole different level. It's gonna bring people in pretty much probably faster. I mean, some of them, I mean, some of the characters arm or like, obscure like, um, this gallery worker. Bryson. That's Billy Magnuson. Have you seen the television version of? Maybe not because I think it's on Epix, which I don't know who owns that channel. But no, wait, no, They loaded the first season on Netflix. Now it's, um, get your big turn. Get Shorty into a another. That's another time for Rene Russo. She's in the film version of Get Shorty, and then Billy Magnuson is in the television version of Get Shorty. He's not Shorty, but he's somebody else. But, you know, I mean, um, and also the plot of the TV show isn't really it's only vaguely based on the concept of the movie. Just somebody in the criminal underworld goes into the movie business, you know, that's basically it. That's good, though. Course no doubt is in the TV show.

spk_1:   11:45
Yeah, I remember hearing about that. I have. I haven't seen it.

spk_0:   11:48
So how should we unravel this review? Should we go death to death? Or should we just talk about which characters we like? Things we don't like?

spk_1:   11:56
Well, I mean, you might want to start off with, um, just the basic concept of it, you know, you know that it's in the art world, you know, we were struck into the movie, will replace into the art world. Jake Gyllenhaal's Are I Guess You Call Jake Gyllenhaal, our protagonist, although I don't know if like it. Yeah, like I'm hard. It's hard to say anybody's protagonist because, like you say, it shifts

spk_0:   12:21
well, you stick toe What emerges as the final girl comin trope in horror movies, and it actually happens in here. But it's a very subtle shift, and she's like the assistant and she keeps getting hired and fired by this group of friends, cause there's basically three art galleries that are competing have the next award winning show or the money making show, right? And and some of them have, like a past history, like they all worked at the same gallery at one point. Or, I mean, okay, there is a band, but I don't know if anybody knows why the title is called Velvet Bus Off. That was a band. Rene Russo's character was in the band and that other

spk_1:   12:56
ladies, they say it real briefly. Yeah, there's a scene between her and some guy who was, um, where is she? He explains that like, Oh, yeah, I used to love the early work with your band Belle buds buzz off or something,

spk_0:   13:08
but you know, if you're not paying attention. You miss it, you know, it's

spk_1:   13:13
it is. It is a blink and you'll miss it seeing.

spk_0:   13:15
But she seems to have a history with Toni Collette's character, who was like the rival. I don't know why I don't What do you call these people? The people that curated right gallery. I don't know what you call them,

spk_1:   13:24
Curator Sze

spk_0:   13:26
maybe. Um so they have kind of a rivalry, and in between is they seem to be friends with also John Malkovich. She's just playing like another local artist. And there's a couple other artists who are kind of upset and, uh and yet, like, attracted to this art that just pops up kind of on that wolf. Is it on accident? I don't know. Well,

spk_1:   13:46
yeah, because, uh, because that one girl, the girl that keeps getting tossed around like you were saying because what she just like stumbles across it. Somebody in her building dies and all the shit's gonna be thrown out.

spk_0:   13:58
Oh, he's not the assistant. She's just Ah, she's in a friend. She's a friend of the assistant that works with the art critic at one of the galleries. Like I said, it's like four or five people in the art world that are all connected. But Josephine is not the assistant. Coco is the assistant, but Coco calls just Coco calls Josephine is beginning the movie. Tell Josephine that her husband or boyfriend is cheating on her. Josephine goes home, finds a dead body in the hallway, right, Goes to the dead man's apartment, finds all the artwork. Do you think the dead man is the artist? Who do you think that's the guy that had the art and the art killed him, and then it just he kept going, like the ring or the grudge or something. They just pass on the curse.

spk_1:   14:41
Oh, yeah. I'm gonna stick Thio. I think it's Ah, I think it is the artist. But, uh, it could be wrong because the whole thing is only the people that dire people who profit from it. So I don't know. I mean, you don't know with you. I agreed, because I mean, John Malkovich is the only one that as well. Spoiler alert. Ah, Of the main characters, John Malkovich is the only one that, like, survives

spk_0:   15:06
Unless he's really the fucking artist, cause he's drawn strange patterns in the sand at the end of the movie,

spk_1:   15:14
I thought that was like him. Just going back to like just being pure about it like that was the whole thing. There's not not for profit, that's is him bringing joy or his creativity out. And that's why he doesn't get killed because he's still pure artist.

spk_0:   15:27
Yeah, maybe, Um, the deaths are not that graphic, folks, if you're also wondering whether I mean this movie could have almost been PG 13 if not for like

spk_1:   15:36
like the one scene, which is six. So what? The one scene and it's kind of alluded to in the previews with the the giant mirror ball? Uh, yeah, you know,

spk_0:   15:46
not that bad. She sticks her hand in it. Then

spk_1:   15:48
he comes

spk_0:   15:49
out the other three sides. Not very much blood.

spk_1:   15:52
No, but I think, uh but I think, But I don't think that was the point. Like the whole time I was watching and I'm like, That's This is not the point. Like it's Ah, because he's not. He's not a Gore guy or anything like that. Dan Gilroy. Uh, I think I don't think he was too interested in making it the Gorius.

spk_0:   16:09
You know what I like? I like what a tight ship they run. What a clean movie like they do not waste a frame,

spk_1:   16:15
right is not over bloated.

spk_0:   16:17
Yeah, exactly. It seems Don't go on too long. They're on the verge of being maybe too short. But it it, like, literally goes boom, boom, boom, boom, boom boom than the movie's over. It's perfect for me like, and he has an aesthetic that I can appreciate. Not that my aesthetic is as good as his and is clean. He obviously has more experience than me, but there was something in there the, um like, not wasting the frames. Not like just because you're there with the equipment doesn't mean you just waste it, you know? And that could be his brother's influence as the editor, I don't know, but even with the talent that he had, he didn't let anybody go on on speech ranting. But the best moment for me is what they use in the It's like a clip in the trailer. It's the trailer moment where Jake Gyllenhaal is screaming like something goddamn strange is happening. Like like, uh, and that's like your return of the living dead moment in the trailer. You don't say no. Right? Uh, some strange, Uh, what's that? I

spk_1:   17:20
said So I think you really enjoyed it.

spk_0:   17:22
Oh, yeah, I guess maybe more than you did. I don't know.

spk_1:   17:24
I place this like if they still have their star rating system, I'd say this is a 3.5. Like I felt like I really enjoyed it. But like, there was something that kept it back from being like a really great movie for me. The special effects. I mean, I don't

spk_0:   17:39
drink e honestly, they're kind of hinky.

spk_1:   17:42
I mean, yes,

spk_0:   17:43
they are. But that isn't like it's not like they wanted to draw back on the eighties. Like I haven't heard anything in interviews like, Oh, yeah, we love this style of these old Dari or gentle movies or with these old eighties nightmare movies. Um, but speaking of nightmare, Elise, I don't know if this ever come up in the podcast. But my idea for a Freddy movie was that there was a haunted painting painting, and Freddie came out of the painting so I can appreciate haunted painting movies as I call for the microphone You're welcome, people.

spk_1:   18:17
Um, yeah, I enjoyed it. Like I said, it is something Help. Help back from being a great movie for me, but, uh, I really dug it. Um, the guy so far has made a bad movie yet.

spk_0:   18:29
What is your favorite death scene in the movie, then? Well, I think not mention the one of the end.

spk_1:   18:36
Uh, yeah. You know, um, that might be number two, but I mean, I'll say, I mean, I'll go with the obvious one because it's kind of the shows, the showpiece. But that'd be the Toni Collette Daph with the, um I mean, like I said, it's kind of a showpiece,

spk_0:   18:52
with the exception of it. Tried to tell these little stories which each one of the characters, and it does take its time with each one of their deaths. What you get for a trope that you see if you're going to spend some money, you take your time and you set up and execute a death sing. So, yeah, those are the warrior's work in the movie,

spk_1:   19:11
right? And you know, it's not purely a horror movie. I mean, I think it's more of a satire of the art world that has.

spk_0:   19:16
It's like was that good satirist who died? He made a lot of movies in the eighties. Maybe early nineties and the jeez, you have a movie? Is it l A What is that movie? What is that freaking movie?

spk_1:   19:30
I'm not sure you know Robert Altman. Oh, Shortcuts.

spk_0:   19:35
Yeah. I was gonna say shortcuts. There's a helicopter scene, right? Is there a helicopter flying over somebody's house?

spk_1:   19:42
Uh, yeah. There's a few shots like

spk_0:   19:44
that. Um, funny way to get the Altman's from taking through like I'm just like running file folders through my brain is that it was like letting the machine click through and then oh, helicopters. You're like, What the fucking helicopters are you talking about, huh, man? Good stuff, Dave. I didn't know if I like Altman that much.

spk_1:   20:12
I seem to remember you saying you didn't, um, I I like some of this stuff. I mean, he's not. He's not one of my guys had to go to bat for, but

spk_0:   20:20
doing this movie Guillory is like, taken. Gilroy is kind of like Altman in this movie, so he's like the art world, the art world of Altman and then what is the horse stuff? His horse style? Who does that remind you of From like the movie? The like horror movie world?

spk_1:   20:37
Um who? That's a good question. Um, I don't know. You kind of Ah, I'm gonna kind of piggyback off of something you said I'd say, you know, maybe a little bit like some dirty Are Gento? Um, I don't know. That's a tough one.

spk_0:   20:59
Yeah, there's a specific movie of Dario Argento is on thinking of where his daughter, Well, the characters played by his daughter. She's being stalked by a rapist. But she has a condition where she goes into, like, an art museum, and the artwork will start to come alive until hallucinate. Um, that is the name of that movie.

spk_1:   21:16
Was the Stendhal? Yeah,

spk_0:   21:18
Stendhal syndrome exactly like she had this condition where the artwork would. She would start to hear it and see it. And there's a moment in the movie actor in this movie for Jake. Gyllenhaal's character thinks he's hearing audio being played of his criticisms of artwork like He's in a room and insulation and and he thinks he's hearing all his reviews, played back out of his own voice,

spk_1:   21:43
right? Uh, that was actually pretty creepy. Scene

spk_0:   21:47
It is creepy because of its minimalism. Like, I don't know if there are some horror film makers that withholding, withholding, withhold, and that starts to scare you.

spk_1:   21:58
Well, that that one. I have a halfway decent sound system, and they really, like, played with your, uh, if you have, ah, surround sound, They really fucking play with your head on that one. Because, like, they're just sounds bouncing around everywhere.

spk_0:   22:12
Yeah, it's not centered in one stereo mix. It's left and right. Correct.

spk_1:   22:18
Well, it's a yes. I mean, I have surround sound. Says, like, front left back, right? Like it just keep shit keeps bouncing around like you just like to put you in a head space of, like, all the voices air in your head or

spk_0:   22:29
Yeah, you feel like the character, right? Because they're coming in from all directions.

spk_1:   22:34
Oh, wow. No,

spk_0:   22:37
the audio have is built into my TV. I want to get a sound bar. Maybe I will, but

spk_1:   22:43
that's actually what I believe it. Dude, they're actually worthy investment. I I was down on, um I mean, I have the surround sound version where I saw the back speakers, but yeah, I've got a visual. Sound bar is actually pretty pretty bad ass was amassed

spk_0:   22:58
EMI except, like Davis Fortunate lives in a house. I live in a townhouse, so I got neighbors up my ass. So I'm sure if I played a sound bar or had a surround system like Dave, then they really be calling the police like I'm executing. Somebody was able to hear, like, blood and Daddy murder. Definitely murder gunshots if I'm watching, like

spk_1:   23:17
Terminator two.

spk_0:   23:20
What's going on? Nothing. Just

spk_1:   23:22
choke out Somebody named Sara Carter. I don't know. Said my car.

spk_0:   23:26
Yeah, man. Dan. Um, okay. Rating scale. I think we have to compare it to other movies if we can, Um, Benson opens later. Binge? Never.

spk_1:   23:39
Uh, I'm gonna say binge bins later. I mean, I really enjoyed it. I don't think it quite got its hooks into me the way I thought it was going to, but I still say it's worth watch, but if you don't watch it for a week or two, I'm not gonna You're not gonna, like, miss out too much, I think. Fair enough. I don't think we're gonna be Bernbach bird box like challenges with this. Always like,

spk_0:   24:05
what are you gonna tell people that binge now, then, if they're binge pigeon, this one later.

spk_1:   24:11
Oh, Ben's right now. Um, well, I guess I'm gonna kinda contradict myself, cause I don't think you can binge it just yet. Maybe like in a week or two. I'm thinking back when I saw it in the theater, but that movie I told you about it. Can you ever forgive me with Melissa McCarthy? I fuckin that one I really liked. Lately I'm trying to catch up on all the Oscar movies.

spk_0:   24:34
But sounding the same category is

spk_1:   24:36
No, it's not. Oh, shit. By comparison,

spk_0:   24:39
Yeah, That's what I thought they had to be comparable.

spk_1:   24:41
Okay. Um oh, um, not quite the same thing. I'm trying to think, like, painter movies or something to do with painting. Uh oh. No, no, no, no. You You throw something out, I'll think about that first

spk_0:   25:03
binge. Now, watch this movie right now. What's available for somebody like me, you know, spoils it for you on Twitter, which I take unclear what he did. Um, so watch velvet buzzsaw Binge later. Watch Stendhal syndrome. and Ben's Never 967 Evil Part two.

spk_1:   25:25
All right. Um, I will say, uh Okay, go ahead. And I'd say a binge now, Nightcrawler. Because if you want to get into Dan Gilroy's world, I think that's the best one to go with. Um, I already said this. Pins later. Bins never. Ah, try to think something else with Jake Gyllenhaal. That was a bad movie. I don't know. Fuck that memory

spk_0:   25:52
knocks down his house. What's up? That movie where he knocks down his house,
