We are about half-way through this madness called summer slash 2020 which is a summer long horror movie marathon on the show.  We invite you to watch and scream along with us.

Tonight we are discussing 1 film that has many titles. 

How many titles does this movie have? This movie has been released as  Deep Red, Profondo Rosso (That’s Italian name) , The Hatchet Murders, Dripping Deep Red, The Sabre Tooth Tiger, DeepRed Hatchet Murders, Mystery of The Abandoned House, The Shivers of Angst,  Red-The Color of Death, and in Japan it was billed as Suspiria 2. 

Of course, we are talking about Dario Argento’s Deep Red, which is his masterpiece of giallo cinema, according to the internet. 

Who is Argento? Italy’s Master of Thrills , and Godfather of Italian slasher cinema that spun its own subgenre of artistic horror called giallo.  He also co-wrote Once Upon a Time in the West.  He was a consultant on Dawn of the Dead for Romero, and  released Zombi, which is the Italian remix of Dawn of the Dead. 

How many Argentos have worked in film?  Father was a director.  His brother is a producer.  His two daughters are actors. Asia is probably more well known.His long time partner and Asia’s mother is in Deep Red.  she was featured in several films, Daria Nicolodi.

Trivia: Dario presented his father Salvatore and his brother Claudio with a 500 script to Deep Red and then cut it down to 321 odd pages. 

They shot in some place called Turin because the director wanted to physically occupy a place he heard was filled with satanists.

He said you just need to watch a movie to know how a director was feeling when he made it.

There are also at least 4 versions of this movie and it was never released in the UK.  Arrow Video did a good job trying to piece it back together, so it is uncut but one shot is still messed up in Blue Underground’s release… Most versions are trimmed down cuts of the US Hatchet Murders release which loses 22 mins of gore and sex, oh my! 

Apparently Halloween’s killer POV was inspired by what Argento did with the black-gloved killer’s pov shots in this movie.  As well as the boiling death in Halloween 2.  We’re talking the original Halloweens 1 and 2, during the Carpenter years. 

We pitch our giallo slasher films such as The Cheesemonger.  We have a side discussion about Highlander and Batman anime.
